Job Summary:
The Tooling Engineer is responsible for managing tooling processes, building timelines (Tool Tracker), and ensuring that tooling is consistently high-quality and produced on time. This role requires a strong focus on utilizing the latest technologies to improve product quality and meet customer expectations. Additionally, the Tooling Engineer will provide best practices in metal forming, support new tooling buyoffs at vendors, and assist with production assembly tooling when necessary.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure tooling budgets and objectives are met or exceeded.
- Forecast and budget tooling requirements for new and existing programs.
- Coordinate the implementation, development, and improvement of tooling across multiple departments.
- Oversee the fabrication of tooling and equipment to support both new and existing programs.
- Implement engineering changes and maintain tooling progress reports.
- Act as the technical contact for vendors on tooling issues and developments.
- Maintain tooling trackers and ensure accurate reporting.
- Conduct FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) for new tooling.
- Optimize tooling blank sizes and material usage for new business.
- Address part scrap concerns during the tooling design process.
- Work with purchasing on tooling quotes and vendor decisions.
- Support program managers in all programs and ensure timely PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) achievement.
- Approve and sign off on metal forming tooling and gauges.
- Collaborate with manufacturing engineering for assembly tooling and improvements.
- Develop and improve preventive maintenance (PM) programs for assembly tooling.
- Coordinate RFQs (Request for Quotations) and participate in vendor sourcing decisions.
- Travel as needed, with a valid passport, to customer or supplier facilities for tooling development and support.
- Adhere to ISO, IATF 16949, and MAFACT requirements.
- Maintain compliance with environmental and health & safety standards, including ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering (or related field), or equivalent technical qualifications (e.g., Community College graduate or certified apprenticeship in tool & die).
- Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of manufacturing experience in the automotive industry, with a focus on metal fabrication, assembly processes, and tooling.
- Minimum 5 years of post-graduation experience in a press shop for metal forming.
- Experience with progressive dies, transfer dies, blank forming, and tube forming.
- Expertise in GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
- Strong understanding of robotic welding and tooling for automotive production.
- Skills:
- Effective communication and presentation skills (verbal and written).
- Team-oriented approach with demonstrated planning and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), MS Project, VISI, and SolidWorks.
- Strong relationship-building skills and vendor management experience.

- Travel required (occasional overnight stays)
- Must obtain and retain a valid passport
- Ability to work in an office environment but also be exposed to plant conditions (temperature, noise, etc.)
- Overtime may be required to meet project/program deadlines
